After only an hour of exploring, Andy was fed up. If he hadn’t known how important it was to remain silent, he would have screamed at the top of his lungs, just to release his tension. Why, why had he ever agreed to this division of teams?

Actually, he knew why. He was sick and tired of the power struggle between Amy Seven and Amy Five. And even though they seemed to have come to terms with a kind of joint leadership, he was still annoyed with them. These Amys always wanted to be in charge. It never occurred to them that he might want to be the leader.

With this smaller group, he was definitely in command, but it wasn’t much of an army. Amy One wouldn’t stop whining. All she talked about was finding Andy Eleven, as if no one else on the island mattered. Andy Six was worthless. Having him around was like dragging a suitcase full of stuff you didn’t really need. As his powers diminished, he lagged behind, and Andy and Amy One were always having to push him to keep going. It was only basic human integrity that kept Andy from dumping him somewhere and letting him fend for himself.

Aly was trying to be cooperative. At least she had a good attitude. But she couldn’t keep up with them, not even with Andy Six, and she was already getting very tired. She put on a brave face and kept moving, but Andy could see the fatigue in her eyes.

They were nearing cabins now. “How many of these are occupied?” Andy asked Six.

“I don’t know. These are the girls’ cabins.”

The organization didn’t have all the Amys, so some of the cabins had to be empty, Andy thought—unless acceleration had already begun, as well as the mating between the male and female clones. For all he knew, these cabins were now filled with the next generation of Amys and Andys.

“Stay here,” he instructed the others. Alone, he moved silently toward the cabins. If he could locate an empty one, they could take a break inside, and Aly could sleep.

He approached the closest cabin first, number eight. Peering through the window, he could see a bed—with an occupant. At least, he assumed that the lump wrapped in a blanket was a person. He couldn’t see the face, but the hair was brown, like most of the Amys’.

He moved on to the next cabin. This one was occupied too—but here he had a clear look at the person inside. She was sitting on her bed, looking out the window on the opposite side of the room. This gave Andy a three-quarter profile of her face, and he gasped.

For a second, he thought he was looking at his mother, Eve Carrington. Then she moved slightly, her face becoming clear in the moonlight, and he knew it wasn’t her. This woman was younger … in her twenties, he estimated. But he could see why he had mistaken her for his mother. This woman too was an adult version of Amy.
